{"id":497,"date":"2019-04-24T15:13:40","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T15:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jpelectricalcompany.com\/blog\/?p=497"},"modified":"2019-04-24T15:13:40","modified_gmt":"2019-04-24T15:13:40","slug":"more-on-electrical-distribution-equipment-failure-should-it-be-kept-or-discarded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jpelectricalcompany.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/more-on-electrical-distribution-equipment-failure-should-it-be-kept-or-discarded\/","title":{"rendered":"More on Electrical Distribution Equipment Failure \u2013 Should It Be Kept or Discarded?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As we promised in our last installment, we will continue the\ndiscussion on equipment failure.&nbsp; We will\ncontinue to dive into various electrical components and how they work, their longevity,\nusage, and testing.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Transformers<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformers are large scaled pieces of equipment that are\nused to either reduce or increase the voltage produced by a current.&nbsp; Liquid filled transformers are most often\ninstalled outdoors on a concrete slab, under a canopy to protect against the\nelements.&nbsp; The liquid serves two\npurposes, it cools the transformer coils and provides insulation between the\ncoils and the grounded tank.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Older transformers use insulating mineral oils where as\nnewer transformers use either a silicon based, fluorinated hydrocarbon, or\ncombustion resistant vegetable oil based dielectric fluid or synthetic\nesters.&nbsp; These insulating fluids break\ndown first due to the entrance of moisture, impurities, and intermittent\nperiods of heating and cooling.&nbsp; Liquid\ntransformers can deliver consistent service for more than 30 years with regular\nmaintenance, fluid replacement, testing, and repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Low Voltage Circuit\nBreakers<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>LV distribution systems commonly use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpelectricalcompany.com\/products\">molded case circuit breakers<\/a>.&nbsp; These systems contain two elements that deteriorate when used, a spring-loaded operating mechanism and copper contacts.&nbsp; These two components will wear out from abrasion while closing and arching when the breaker is opened.&nbsp; Larger breakers can be replaced.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As these systems age the mechanisms that operate will start\nto slow down which delays clearing times.&nbsp;\nThe springs operating the mechanism are strong and hardly ever need to\nbe fixed or repaired.&nbsp; Lubrication\nhowever will deteriorate and need to be replenished to avoid the slower\nclearing times.&nbsp; When a breaker operates\nabove the normal trip rate it should be replaced.&nbsp; These systems often last upwards of 20 years.&nbsp; After 20 years replacement is most often\nrecommended whether or not you are seeing slower clearing times during testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Low Voltage and Medium\nVoltage Cables<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For most of us cables are quiet simple consisting of a\nstranded aluminum or copper conductor that is wrapped in insulation as well as\na jacket that is resilient to the weather.&nbsp;\nThe manufacturing of electrical power and control cables sounds fairly\nsimple however this industry is one that is in fact highly specialized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assessing the integrity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpelectricalcompany.com\/electricalproducts\">electrical cabling<\/a> and its remaining longevity is important however can be quite complicated.&nbsp; Cables can quickly lose electrical integrity while it is in use because of air pockets, gas pockets, and the voids found in the insulation.&nbsp; This occurs due to thermal expansion and contraction.&nbsp; If cables are in water their deterioration will occur at a faster rate.&nbsp; Testing and analysis on these voids will offer up an estimate on the life that remains for the cable.
